Collecting survey-based social network information in work organizations

Collecting social network data among organization members using surveys is challenging and requires a well-considered strategy. Based on extensive past experience with collecting information in work organizations surveys, we identify discuss four major elements of the collection process, all linked dependent specific research question objective: 1) negotiating access to organization; 2) identifying network’s boundary, relevant formal organizational structures that affect networks, sampling approach; 3) deciding how approach subjects collect data; and, 4) providing useful ethically-sensitive feedback its members. Decisions each these their co-alignment, particularly respect chosen question, crucial successful study. We offer guidelines provide examples for elements.
